ASKING AND GIVING DIRECTIONS

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW HOW TO ASK AND GIVE DIRECTIONS?

Knowing how to give and ask for directions is always good to know for when you find yourself lost in a new town, place, school, etc.

In addition, you may be in a situation in which you will help someone who is lost find the way.

That is why it is important to know how to ask for directions and give clear directions.

You don´t want to end up at the wrong place or give someone wrong directions!!!!!!


 ACTIVITY1

 VOCABULARY
You will need a dictionary to define the following vocabulary. Knowing the definition to these words will help you to complete the task based activity

ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS
Useful Expressions for asking for directions:

5. I am looking for this address….
6. Can you show me where the ….. is?


GIVING DIRECTIONS
Useful Expressions for giving directions:

5. You will pass a….(i.e.yellow bulding)
6. Straight ahead of you…


ACTIVITY 2
 In this activity, you will watch the following videos. In the following videos, you will experience a teacher recreating a real life and useful situation to her students. The teacher first demonstrates how it is done and then the students act it out.

Part 1:  
The teacher explains to the students that they will be recreating a real life and useful situation, in this case, asking for directions on school campus.

Part 2:
 TEACHER ACTS
Teacher will ask for directions from other students on campus. The teacher takes the roll of a new student on the school campus who does not know how to get to the cafeteria.

In the video, the teacher walls to a student sitting on a campus table and asks her how to get to the cafeteria. The students gives her detailed directions. The teacher confirms she understands how to find the cafeteria by repeating the directions she was given. The teacher thanks the student and starts her way to the cafeteria.


Part 3: 
 IT´S THE STUDENTS TURN!

After observing the example of the teacher on how to ask and give directions, now the students will have to create their own situation.

In the video, students decide who will take the role of asking for directions (Student A) and the role of giving directions (Student B)
  • Student A will be the ¨new student¨ on campus and will kindly asks for directions to get to the cafeteria.  
  • Student B who provides the directions answers in the most detailed possible way.
  • Student A repeats the information to ensure he/she understands.
  • Student B confirms the information is correct.
  • Student A say thank you and start his/her way to the cafeteria.
